I'm currently working as an upstream process development scientist at Pfizer, based in the Grange Castle site. My role is focused on pilot-scale upstream process development, with experience in multiple cell lines, intensified scale-up and utilisation of computational fluid dynamics approaches for scale-up and scale down of processes.Prior to this role I completed a full-time research PhD in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland supported by the Irish Research Council. My PhD research focused on the role of microRNAs in the remyelination process, and examining the role of miR-155 and it's targets in particular, primarily using immunocytochemistry of brain slices and various rtPCR approaches including OpenArray.I continued this work in a postdoctoral research fellowship, focusing more on manipulating miRNA expression to enhance the remyelination process, utilising pharmacological stimulation, gene knock-down and custom target-site blockers to modulate miRNA activity.During both of these roles I was very active in science communication, including participation in the SciComm Collective initiative by the Department of Health, primarily explaining the science behind Covid-19 vaccines to the general public. I additionally helped deliver numerous scientific communication classes in association with the British Council.
