Duties involve conducting daily fieldwork for the Prairie Wetland Salinization Experiment (PWSE) My project focusing on the freshwater clam component.Salinization of freshwaters has been identified as an ecological threat in Canada and warrants investigation to better understand the risks posed to aquatic ecosystems. The salts of concern will be road de-icing salts used in Canada, which include sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), and magnesium chloride (MgCl2). Data generated assists risk assessment efforts across Canada.Of particular interest is how anthropogenic salt inputs such as road de-icers impact freshwater bivalves. The objective of my part of the PWSE was to evaluate the chronic toxicity of sodium chloride (NaCl) on grooved fingernail clams (Sphaerium simile). As study was part of the Prairie Wetland Salinization Experiment (PWSE), wherein shallow wetland mesocosms were dosed with nominal chloride concentrations of 22, 39, 68, 120, 210, 369, 648, 1139 and 2000 mg Cl-/L (n=1), plus with three controls, and monitored. A total of ten clams were placed in each mesocosm and followed for 29 days. Overall, Sphaerium simile appear to be sensitive to elevated concentrations of chloride as shown through impacts on mortality and reproduction, but relatively high variation and poor control performance hindered our ability to discern trends unambiguously. Warm temperatures in our mesocosms may have been the driving factor in this variability. Further work to improve the performance of these organisms in the wetland mesocosms will be undertaken in 2024.
