About Conor Ryan

I have recently completed my M.Sc. in Quantum Science and Technology at Trinity College Dublin, building on my undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics at Trinity College Dublin. I have cultivated my interest in quantum physics through the completion of several research projects in the field under the supervision of both academics in TCD and abroad. In particular, I have a strong interest in computationally studying condensed matter open quantum systems problems, such as spin relaxation and decoherence. I aim to study these problems using classical and quantum computational methods along with developing the theory.Beyond my purely academic pursuits, I also strive to make a positive change in the landscape of physics locally, nationally, and internationally. I work on this with the Theoretical Physics Student Association and Institute of Physics where I have been involved in student seminars and workshops, talks given by academics, successfully advocating for Irish membership of CERN, and the organisation of PLANCKS.From these experiences I have gained and demonstrated skills in project management, critical thinking, organisation, communication, teamwork and leadership.

    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    • Held two tutorials a week for 1st year Physics and Chemistry students in Linear Algebra and Calculus. • Corrected two sets of assignments a week and provided detailed feedback to students. • Assisted in correcting the end of semester exams. • Volunteered to hold exam revision tutorials for all students in the module. • Corrected assignments for a 2nd year Fourier Analysis module. • Developed public speaking, communication, organisation, teaching, and administrative skills.
  • Institute Of Physics
    Campus Ambassador
Institute Of Physics Sep 2023 - Jun 2024
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    • Worked with the Theoretical Physics Student Association to organise a Qiskit Fall Fest Extension Event in collaboration with IBM, where participating students completed Qiskit challenges designed by IBM and listened to a talk from an IBM pre-doctoral researcher. • Organised a postgraduate information talk for TCD Theoretical Physics and Physics students to hear about possible postgraduate paths after completing their degrees. • Began a data collection project on TCD Theoretical Physics alumni to gather information on the most common paths students take after graduation and receive feedback about the potential options. • Promoted a TPSA project to create and provide Leaving Certificate Maths resources to schools. • Gained insight into the wider physics student network accessed through working with the IOP. • Developed teamwork, communication, organisation, and project management skills.
  • Theoretical Physics Student Association
    Auditor
Theoretical Physics Student Association Oct 2021 - Oct 2022
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    - Tasked with coming up with both short and long term plans for the association. - Organised various events such as talks from both students and academics for the members of the association. This provided students with insight into cutting edge topics in modern research from accomplished academics and on important aspects of being a student such as how to secure internships and deal with final year projects.- Organised committee meetings for the association in order to make sure everyone is properly carrying out their respective roles and the association is on track to achieve its goals along with implementing a couple of new roles into the committee such as Science Outreach Officer.- Created links between the Theoretical Physics Student Association with external institutions such as the Tyndall National Institute and the Irish Centre for High End Computing.- Assisted in the bid to bring PLANCKS theoretical physics competition to Dublin in 2024.- Taught a day long quantum information and Qiskit workshop to physics students of all experience levels.
  • University Of Parma
    Student Research Intern
University Of Parma May 2022 - Jul 2022
    Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
    • Calculated energy levels in various quantum mechanical spin systems using IBM’s quantum software Qiskit. • Studied quantum mechanical methods such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver algorithm and Trotter decomposition. • Studied systems such as the spin-1/2 trimer and spin-1 dimer with external effects such as a magnetic field. • Worked directly with a pre-doctoral researcher from IBM. • Presented the progress of my research and discussed next steps of the project with my supervisors at regular intervals. • Held a 2-hour workshop with local secondary school students to demonstrate the type of work done in physics research, along with attempting to make physics a more accessible subject to study at 3rd level. • Experienced a research environment in a university and country outside of my own. • Developed public speaking, organisational, communication and teamwork skills as well as skills in the areas of quantum information and simulation, critical thinking and problem-solving relating to a high-level problem in the field of molecular magnetism and quantum technology.
  • Laidlaw Foundation
    Student Research Intern
    Laidlaw Foundation May 2021 - Aug 2021
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
    • Completed a 7 week research project under the supervision of Prof. Alessandro Lunghi of the Quantum Materials Dynamics group in the School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin titled "Computational Study of Dipolar Noise in Molecular Spin Qubits". • Ran computer simulations in a Linux environment using the MolForge software designed by Prof. Lunghi to study the decoherence effects of spin-spin interactions in model systems such as electronic and nuclear spin chains and also a more realistic system such as the [CpTi(cot)] molecule.• Presented my work to the entire research group upon completion of the project.• Developing critical thinking, problem solving, project management, organisational, communication and presentation skills.
