About Constanza Miranda, Phd

Constanza is a multidisciplinary academic interested in the intersection between the creativity of design, the ethics of cultural anthropology and the tech aspects of engineering. She is the assistant dean for undergraduate mentoring for the School of Engineering, and design faculty in BME. Before JHU, she was an assistant professor at PUC Chile's Engineering School where she founded and directed (with a fantastic team!) the engineering design initiative (DILAB). She was the co-founder of the startup Simulmedic. Constanza holds a Ph.D. in Design with a focus in anthropology from NC State University. While a Fulbright grantee, she worked as a visiting researcher at Stanford's CDR (Mech. Engineering). As an entrepreneur, a team player, and researcher, her focus is on biomedical devices, engineering design education & pre-engineering education. Past experiences involve work in industries such as Cooper San Francisco, Karl Storz Endoskope, and Continuum Milan. Today, she constantly interacts with industry linking students to the conversations of the current practice. Her interest in creating tools for a hands-on education is embodied in the Anthro Design Crash Course book and the SaviaLab pre-engineering design program for rural schools in Chile. The latter was recognized by the 2018 Airbus GEDC (Global Engineering Deans Council) Diversity Award sponsored by UNESCO because of its aim to democratize technology. More of her over 15 years of teaching experience and backpacking (just kidding) can be found at: www.constanzamiranda.cl

  • Simulmedic
    Co-Founder (Former)
    Simulmedic 2014 - 2021
Simulmedic is a startup that looks to make simulation to train medical professions, affordable, scalable and easy to use. Our R&D process starts with looking into the user experience through an anthro-design lens. Then, we develop the technology to achieve the objectives of these individuals. Most of my work today goes into understanding the human interface through applied ethnographic research for developing products and platforms that resonate with the people in the service and medical design areas.

    Executive Education, Training And Consulting
Dilab Engineering Design Initiative Uc Jun 2011 - Dec 2020
    G-Local
Businesses or organizations cannot always send their human resources to school for training. Knowing that some things can trigger good working practices, and using some design driven methods to achieve innovation, I have developed workshops that embed the design process with a goal oriented human bias. They are frequently tailored to the company's needs and contain a systemic experience design deliverable. Companies and organizations that have enrolled in my workshops come from retail, airlines, NGO's and telecommunications. Some of the companies and organizations have been: Antofagasta railways (FCAB Antofagasta), Teach for All (NYC), Infrastructure Forum (DC), Diploma for food innovation (PIAL-SCL), within others. We hold an executive education program Diplomado Ingeniería Diseño e Innovación at the School of Engineering UC (first version on 2019) and we hold closed consultant work with companies like Santa Rita Vineyards.
