About Barb Allen
Looking for a Construction Industry Speaker with Real. Construction. Experience? Someone who speaks your audience's language, has worn their boots, and knows how to deliver a message in a way that truly resonates, cultivates curiosity, and inspires change within an industry that tends to be comfortable with "the way we have always done it"? If that is the type of speaker you are looking for, we should talk!I have decades of industry experience in both the Field and the Office, on both the General Contractor and Developer sides of the industry, I am the speaker that your audience can relate to and learn from. After graduating with my Bachelor's in Construction Management, I put on my carpenter bags and spent 19 years in the field climbing ladder rungs that included Carpenter Apprentice, Carpenter Foreman, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent...most always as the only woman in the field, the trailer, or the conference room.In 2015, I decided it was time to learn the other side of the business and moved into the office. I started in Pre-Construction and climbed ladder rungs that included Project Executive, Operations Director, and Managing Director all the while realizing that the climb as a woman was actually getting harder instead of easier.Being a Woman in Construction has taught me what it’s like to love an industry that doesn’t always love you back. Diversity of Experience has provided me with an incredibly well-rounded understanding of how the Construction Industry works…and where we can improve. Combining those experiences with a message of change provides a level of relatability, education, and inspiration our industry is seeking.Want to learn more? CurrentAs a woman with decades of experience in the construction industry and most of it…on the jobsite. I KNOW how rewarding this industry can be, but...I also know that we could improve. Construction Industry Speaker
CurrentLeveraging Curiosity to Drive Construction Industry Change through Keynotes and Workshops.
Managing Director
As the multi-family sector grew, so did the need for a common denominator, and that is when I was promoted to Managing Director. Majority of this role was similar to my Director of Operations role, but I was now solely focused on the success of our Multi-Family division.
Director Of Operations
Managing teams directly is what brought me back to the General Contracting side of the industry. I was responsible for one third of our company's business including the project management and field management roles that managed the projects in my division. I also played an active role in marketing, finance, HR and risk management in order to create and.
Construction Project Executive
From napkin sketch to punchlist, I managed the Design and Construction teams for our Luxury Apartment Towers. As the Project Executive for a nationwide developer, I also worked collaboratively with our Leasing & Management teams to ensure the final product met the luxury living experience they were marketing without the need for a robust maintenance team.
Pre-Construction Manager
In January 2015 I decided I wanted experience on the other side of the construction business and chose to move into Pre-Construction. My nearly two decades of field experience prepared me well to establish and confirm budgets for clients at the conceptual stage, help design teams evaluate alternatives to reduce costs and to prepare self-perform estimates.

Project Superintendent
Total $12.6 million between 3 projects including; $9 million renovation and addition to relocate, expand and improve their Emergency Center; $1.6 million conversions of patient rooms into administrative areas; and $2 million converting an open air courtyard between 4 buildings into a 2 story mechanical facility for flood protection.
Project Superintendent
$6 million, 70,700SF remodel and library addition for North Kansas City School District. My first project as the lead superintendent. Over two decades later and I still maintain relationships with our owner's representative and several subcontractors who were part of this successful team.
Assistant Superintendent
$100 million, 500,000SF, seven-story structural steel office building and a 10-story, 2,500 car precast parking garage. My first out of town project; learning how to successfully operate in a town that was unfamiliar with J.E.Dunn and working to ensure the subs and suppliers wanted to continue the relationship we were developing for future projects.
Carpenter Foreman
This is the project in which I began to manage multiple crews including multiple trades. I was ultimately 2nd in command behind a fantastic superintendent who knew how to relinquish enough reigns for me to learn yet succeed.
Carpenter Foreman
This is the position in which I began the experience of managing people; running a 6-8 man crew executing the finish carpentry scopes of work.
Carpenter
Union Carpenter Local #61 - learning not only the carpentry trade and the building process hands-on, boots on the ground (concrete formwork, layout, doors and hardware, cabinets and countertops) and the level of commitment it would take for me to be successful in this field, but also realizing that despite others skepticism I had truly found my passion.
