A particular effort was made to understand (1) how, when and why root systems can be considered as farm management tools and (2) why shifting from "annual" to more "perennial" agriculture could be beneficial in the long term.Project and team-----------------------------------------------This work is part of the Deepfrontier project which aims at improving our understanding of deep rooting, i.e. what determines deep rooting, the activities of deep roots and which resources from deep soil layers are utilized by crops. With this research focus, the overall aim is to increase the exploitation of the subsoil resources by deep roots and thereby enhance food production in a sustainable way, as the need for resource input for food production and nutrient losses to the environment will be reduced. I was in charge of coordinating the establishment of field experimentations that study the fertilisation efficiency of sludge in grapevine plantation. I was in charge of the implementation, operation and maintenance and evaluation of a community-managed groundwater irrigation pilot trial which was established at Ekxang village. I coordinated the research activities among researchers, national institutions (i.e. Department of Irrigation and Department of Water Resources) and local farmers. Hired for the the final impact assessment study of the Lao Uplands Food Security Improvement Project (LUFSIP). I contributed to the implementation of the investigation questionnaire by selecting adapted criteria according to the project objectives. I led and were responsible for coordinating an investigation team in Houpan province in Northern Laos. We investigated The Provincial and District Agriculture and Forestry Office (PAFO and DAFO) and local farmers in various villages.

Assessment of greenhouse gases emissions in farming systems with the aim to understand the relation between farming practices and greenhouses gases emissions.The work was done by doing:- surveys in different farming systems and productions.- simulation of farms emissions and assessment of farms carbon footprint with a simplified model.
