The Historic House Museum Consortium of Metropolitan Washington D.C. (HHMC) is a diverse collection of over 40 sites open to the public as museums and historic attractions offering a wide variety of experiences. The HHMC exists to promote the professional growth and development of its member historic house museums, to market them to the public, to support the professional development of the staff of its member historic house museums and provide opportunities for them to network and discuss matters of common interest, and to stimulate related scholarship in and public appreciation of historic house museums generally

Falls Church, Virginia

As the sole staffer for Cherry Hill Historic House and Farm, I work to preserve the historical integrity of the house by ensuring any alterations are historically in keeping with the period of the house. Restoration work has included plaster, wallpaper repairs along with foundation work, and weekly cleaning of house and collections. As a small museum, with over 3,000 visitors a year, I rely on the support from the over 30 museum volunteers I recruit, train and schedule for Saturday tours of the Cherry Hill Farmhouse and Barn, as well as, for private tours and programs. These programs are designed to enlighten the public about mid-19th century life in rural Virginia and particularly how the Civil War affected the lives of farmers in the area. Popular programs include our 3rd grade simple machine tour, Girl Scout Teas and four weeks of summer camps.When planning major special events such as Civil War Day and Farm Day and smaller, regularly occurring smaller events such as readings, teas, concerts and workshops, I work closely with the Friends of Cherry Hill Foundation, the Victorian Society, and other local civic groups. I also promote the use of the house for weddings and other special event rentals which take place roughly 7 times a year. All these activities are marketed in coordination with the City of Falls Church Communication team with my role updating the City and Friends Website and social media pages.Serving as an active member of the Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church, I participate in monthly meetings and represent the City on this Council. In my role, I also manage the City of Falls Church Arts and Humanities grant program. This annual program provides $25,000 of operation grants and an additional $25,000 of project grants for the Falls Church Community.

As Program Manager of Volunteer Engagement, I coordinate logistics for roughly 30 educational programs annually including the venue selection, room set up, equipment, and participant registration. I work with colleagues to design session plans, prepare curriculum materials, and identify speakers. The Local Engagement Groups (LEGs), a subset of Exponent Philanthropy’s local programs, offers member-led programming in 7 communities across the country. On these programs, I work in close collaboration with member volunteers, partner organizations, and funding partners to create peer-learning programs. In addition to program planning, I am responsible for strengthening and coordinating Exponent Philanthropy’s greater volunteer management strategy by creating opportunities for more members to get involved in the organization and identifying members for board and committee roles.

While serving on the Board of the Congo Leadership Initiative I saw significant growth both in the organization and on the board of directors. As a board we constructed and implemented a two year strategic plan, designed and facilitated a Board Assessment and lead a local fundraising event.

As Chairman of the Board of Directors, I provide leadership to the Board of Directors and work in partnership with the chief executive to make sure board resolutions are carried out. I guide and mediate board actions with respect to organizational priorities and governance concerns. Key tasks include planning and facilitating the quarterly board meetings and regularly evaluating the performance of the organization in achieving its mission, the performance of the president and the effectiveness of its 9 board members. During my term as Chairman, CLI has grown from 1 to 6 institute locations and trained a total of 1,237 youth leaders.

Lead the re-establishment of the AmeriCorps Alums Washington DC Chapter including recruiting board members and designing the leadership structure. As co-president of the alumni chapter, I managed the 12 member board comprising of five committees. The chapter hosted an average of 25 events a year for the 1200 alumni in Washington DC. Additional roles included helping to create and maintain a social media presence for the chapter and build relationships between the community, chapter membership, national office and other local chapters.

As part of GSCNC’s membership department, I was responsible for the recruitment of 2,200 Girl Scouts 15 elementary schools in Northern Virginia. My recruitment success came from designing a strategy that was formed through research of local demographics, relationships built with schools administrators and thoughtful approaches to ensuring inclusiveness. It was also my responsibility to recruit, appoint, orient, supervise and retain several hundred administrative and troop volunteers vital to the Girl Scout programs.My role also included planning, developing and implementing a 3 day summer camp which provided a quality Girl Scout experience for roughly 100 children and 50 teen and adult volunteers, enhancing the position of Girl Scouting in the community, and further contributing to recruitment and retention of girls and adults.

Through my graduate assistantship, I supported the Maxwell School by developing a system to connect alumni and newly admitted student including scheduling coffee chats for cities in the US and abroad, coordinating logistics of alumni and currently admitted student networking events in DC and NYC and assisting in preparation for Accept Student visit days including updating information packets.

In my role as Volunteer Coordinator, I lead the overall management of both build site and office volunteers working with roughly 2,625 volunteers. This included developing and managing the volunteer calendars for 12 build sites and habitat offices to provide the necessary volunteers for construction, dedication ceremonies, and clerical work. To support the annual student build and Lutheran builds programs, I facilitated working partnerships with 35 churches and 46 high schools in the community. Additional responsibilities included managing the organization’s volunteer management system, website and Facebook page.
