This role covered all aspects of wellbeing, health, and safety across all 5,000 workers doing a wide range of tasks. The major constituents are listed below but generally if there was something ambiguous, pressured, or out-of-BAU it was in my scope. Particular areas of focus were sensitive cases such as bullying and mental health issues; Incident response such as the Christchurch attack on 15 March; upskilling and supporting over 250 Health and Safety Representatives across 40 sites; building and implementing policies, IT systems, improvements, etc. across the business.

The Petroleum Team manages the permitting regime for New Zealand’s oil and gas estate. Companies apply to explore and recover hydrocarbons and if discovered and produced, a royalty is taken. The team’s role is to assess those applications with the aim to maximise the benefit of these reserves for New Zealanders. The core role was to assess applications, balance factors for the best solution, and then provide a clear and concise recommendation. Applications range in complexity and value with decisions having multi-million dollar implications. This includes assessing technical credibility; balancing risks; negotiating; assessing financials; and forecasting indirect implications.Also, manage offshore non-interference provisions across nine government agencies and the petroleum industry.

Led a team of five. Responsibilities ranged from pastoral care for those struggling (including dealing with mental health issues) to running disciplinary processes for those who take too many liberties.

Lifeguarding required a range of people management. Both members of the public, and staff presented challenges to overcome, including managing an active gang member. As Patrol Captain I had overall responsibility for the safety of everyone at the beach. We had no major incidents as they were prevented or addressed early.
