I have the privilege of leading the education of students in a district distinguished by parent involvement, community support and an open and welcoming outlook. The last few years have been marked by significant improvements in our elementary schools, which have gone from some of the lowest performing schools in the state to standouts in scoring and performance, garnering state and national recognition and a chapter in the book “Districts That Succeed: Breaking the Correlation Between Race, Poverty, and Achievement” by Karin Chenoweth.My role as superintendent is to bring that same level of improvement and achievement to all the schools in the district by ensuring our students have everything they need to be successful. Stepping into the superintendent role just before the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic I had no idea the challenges I’d face, including safeguarding that our children not only had access to the technology that would enable them to continue their education, but also the resources to use that technology in an area of Delaware with limited access to broadband internet. I’m a people-oriented leader who reaches out to the community to listen, build support and advocate for our students, teachers and programs. I believe a flattened management model and collaborative decision making at the district level foster better teamwork and that we as district leaders are models for how to have professional discussions where not all the parties will agree. In the end, my philosophy is to follow a “support to schools” model to guarantee success for all our principals and the children we’re charged with educating.
