My desire to learn about and work with people is what inspired me to study in the human services field, an area which has assisted me to build skills in working with relationships and understanding peoples’ needs. I have recently completed a Masters in Social Sciences: Human Services- Counselling and am to undertake advanced counselling placement in 2016. I continue to expand my knowledge through volunteer work and continued professional and personal development.I previously undertook counselling placement at Anchor, a Child, Youth and Family support organisation. While there I had experience implementing therapeutic group activities and providing individual therapeutic support for young people. Through this placement and my studies, I have developed a solid understanding of learning and development and this has helped me to identify that every person, including children and families are unique and require tailored support.Through experience in working at McArthur and OnCall, I have been able to put this into practice through working and following up with different people including parents, children and youth from diverse backgrounds with varied needs, some experiencing psychiatric disabilities, unemployment, financial difficulties, family disputes and relationship issues. I have developed trusting relationships with clients by taking positive action to connect with people, through an open stance to learning and engaging with clients in their growth. I am open to supporting the client’s individual needs, valuing the client for who they are and for what they bring to the service and promoting available skills, strengths and capabilities. I was often commended by my colleagues for my ability to engage with clients, to listen to specified needs and to convey understanding of the client situation, with sensitivity and awareness.
