I grew up in the sheltered suburbs of Denver. I believed there weren't any raging wars, slavery was defeated in the 1800s, and atrocities were isolated events. I was wrong. Having worked as a mental health therapist for 7 years, I have had my heart wrenched and my eyes opened to the tragedies and brutality that are still a universal scourge. Now don't get me wrong. I believe there is a lot of good in the world. In fact, I believe most people are good. But there is also a lot of suffering and abuse, and a lot more than I realized. As an EMDR and ACT trained mental health therapist, I am a force to offset and heal some of that suffering. As a therapist, I have worked with people with all types of mental disorders, from depression to schizophrenia, from pornography addiction to PTSD. But because one of my main passions has been helping refugees, I have been able to work with clients from truly all over the world. This means that the clients I work with come with their own cultures, languages, and unique experiences that require personalized care. I have loved seeing how EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy can transcend those differences and heal the person's past. I also use CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), as well as some MI (Motivational Interviewing) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to help my clients with whatever symptoms they may be experiencing. After I leave the office is when the real work begins as I go home to my two toddlers and give my wife some well-earned respite. When I'm not playing hide and seek or acting like a scary monster, I like to root on my Colorado Rockies baseball team (sometimes hard to do), read a good book (I have the same literary interests as a high school girl), or just spend time with my permanent sleep-over buddy (aka wife). I'm grateful for my satisfying home life as it keeps me motivated to help others improve their lives as well.
