About Xavier Cortada

Xavier Cortada, Miami’s pioneer eco-artist, uses art’s elasticity to work across disciplines to engage communities in problem-solving. Particularly environmentally focused, his work aims to generate awareness and action around climate change, sea-level rise and biodiversity loss. He has created art at the North and South Poles to address environmental concerns at every point in between. Over the past three decades, the Cuban-American artist has created more than 150 public artworks, installations, collaborative murals and socially engaged projects.Cortada, who served as Miami-Dade County's inaugural Artist-in-Residence, has been commissioned to create art for the White House, the World Bank, CERN, the Frost Art Museum, and Miami City Hall, among many other venues in the arts, sciences and government sectors. He has received a National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Excellence is Science Communication Award, a Creative Capital Award and an Environmental Law Institute National Wetlands Award. Other accolades include being inducted into the State of Florida Artists Hall of Fame and delivering a TED Talk on the intersection of art and climate that has received over 1.3 million views. Solo exhibitions include “Sequentia,” Frost Art Museum, Miami, Florida (2010); “Florida is Nature,” The Frank, Pembroke Pines, Florida (2018); “Compartiendo con Bolivia,” Tambo Quirquincho Museum, La Paz, Bolivia (1997).Group exhibitions include “Vanishing Ice: Alpine and Polar Landscapes in Art 1775-2012,” Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis, Minnesota; (2018); “Endangered Species: Artists on the Front Line of Biodiversity,” Whatcom Museum, Bellingham, Washington (2018); “Miami in Transition,” PAMM, Miami, FL (2006).Cortada received the Home & Away Residency, Anderson Ranch, Aspen, Colorado (2022); “Liberty Square'' public art commission, Miami Dade Art in Public Places, Miami, Florida (2021); New York Foundation for the Arts fiscally-sponsored artist (2008 and 2019); Rauschenberg Residency: Rising Waters Confab, Captiva, Florida (2015); National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists & Writers Program, South Pole (2006-2007).Cortada's work is in the permanent collection of the Peréz Art Museum Miami (PAMM), NSU Museum of Art in Ft. Lauderdale, Whatcom Museum, Patricia an Phillip Frost Art Museum, MDC Museum of Art + Design and the Museum of the White Mountains.Cortada was born in Albany, New York, and grew up in and currently resides in Miami, Florida. The CMD sponsors a wide array of research, travel and conference programs aimed at linking scholars with interests in migration and development. We are also expanding our scope with research on race and ethnicity, especially as it relates to migration and development. We develop this and other subject through research and publications and as part of our regular colloquium series which is open to Princeton faculty and students but also members of the community at large.
