My elevator speech: I do work on social relationships as a critical determinant of health, and even more significantly, social relationships as a critical determinant of existence. Faculty Advisors: Carl Latkin & Danielle German Emeritus advisor: Dr. David HoltgraveAbout the Dissertation-Loneliness in the confidant networks of young Black men who have sexual relationships with men (YBMSM)Abstract: Feelings of loneliness are a universal experience of being human; yet for as many as 15-30% of the general population, it is estimated that loneliness is experienced more chronically and acutely. With evidence that the quality of social relationships and social integration is highly important to health, loneliness has been associated with several mental and physical health outcomes. Furthermore, it has been described as an emergent and urgent public health issue, prompting former U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek H. Murthy to assert that the U.S. is “facing an epidemic of loneliness and social isolation.” This study seeks to characterize the experience of loneliness among YBMSM to include an investigation of its relationship to individual and social factors over an 18-month period of assessment as well as the relationship between loneliness and the structure of the personal networks of YBMSM. The results of the study may potentially broaden public health’s understanding of loneliness as experienced by a population challenged by multiple social adversities and health epidemics. Beyond that, the study aspires to engage an approach that centers an appreciation for the quality of social relations in the personal networks/communities of this population who experience heightened vulnerability to their well-being. The study invites consideration of how fulfillment of social needs through feelings of connection and belonging or the lack thereof facilitates or threatens thriving despite the complex social disadvantages that YBMSM face.

Project Coordinator working with Dr. Danielle German on a study examining and exploring the social networks, social influences, social resources, affiliations and social capital among Black gay men and other Black men who have sex with men (MSM) in Baltimore City. We seek to understand the structural aspects of social networks and characterize those networks to essentially understand the formation of networks as well as identify and characterize those networks which promote meaningfulness, resiliency or sexual risk. We are also examining HIV transmission clusters of newly HIV infected Black gay men and other Black MSM to characterize those transmission "families" using phylogenetics analysis.

Helped design evaluation protocols and respond to federal requirements for System of Care grant.MeckCares Independent Living Initiative, October 2006-May 2008· Worked collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary and confluent private/public partnership group to address the community's response to providing support to youth aging out of foster care moving into self-sufficiency. We developed a foundational structure that was eventually adopted and integrated into one of the local non-profit organizations in the community.

Meck Cares is the system of care partnership among local child-serving agencies, families andthe community. Its purpose is to improve outcomes for youth ages 10-21 who have a severeemotional problem and their families.Collaborative Committee for MeckCares October 2008-October 2010· Collaborated with various non-profit organizations and governmental sectors in steering the grant and collaborative work related to System of Care for youth and families impacted by mental health diagnosis in Mecklenburg County. Addressing how to govern the collaborative initiative and make the work widespread through the community. Was one of the two faith community partners on the steering team.

Also supervised 25-30 youth labeled at-risk during two-week trip to South Africa.

Morehouse College Dr. Vanessa Clark'S Lab

We examined the relationship between cardiovascular reactivity and black identity. Morespecifically, I considered the effect of perceived stress and black cultural identity oncardiovascular reactivity. My duties included collection of data on the blood pressure machine,organization of the data, and creation of the database and input of data. Additionally, I trainedother student-researchers to take participants through the experiment, and helped them withanalysis of data.

We examined the interaction of the stress hormone cortisol, a hormone released in response tostress, with cognition (working and declarative memory) in depressed patients. This researchwill contribute to our understanding of the role of environmental and biological stress factors inpsychopathology. We explored emotion perception in individuals with schizophrenia in an emotion discriminationtask and an emotion chimera task. I also helped collect data in the modulated eye-blink startlereflex paradigm with individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar andmajor depression. I also observed SCID interviews.

Conducted analyses of the corpus callosum area from MRI scans, lateralization scores from thedichotic listening task and MMPI M/F scale scores of individuals with schizophrenia andschizoaffective disorder comparing those variables with normal healthy controls. Engaged inexhaustive library research.

Examined the cognitive function of the corpus callosum in normal college students whoperformed computer tasks requiring integration of visual stimuli by both hemispheres. My dutiesincluded recruitment of participants, running participants through the experiment, collection ofdata, data analysis, and library research.
