My professional goal is to develop scientific, problem-solving, and leadership skills to explore how the dynamics of the human brain generate representations of thought, memory, and emotion. As a Ph.D. candidate, I pursued these goals through studying the neural dynamics of autobiographical memory (memory of one's experiences) with fMRI. In addition, I've been fortunate to work in a team seeking to understand the neural and physiological mechanisms for the alleviation of treatment resistant depression with deep brain stimulation. These studies will inform our understanding of how neural networks process information over-time (dynamically) as we remember our past experiences and how neural networks involved in emotional reactivity change with direct stimulation. Across my postdoctoral experiences, I have several peer-reviewed papers showing modulation of emotion and memory via direct brain stimulation in humans. I'm currently developing methods for recording from the brain and testing memory for real-world, 1st person experiences in patient's with implanted neural recording and stimulation systems. Broader career goals include becoming respected as a translator of science for public knowledge and consulting with businesses to enhance their product through cognitive neuroscience research. Overall, my career philosophy starts with using the skills I've gained to follow and lead others in exploring the dynamics of human experience.I direct the Immersive NeuroModulation and Neuromodulation (INMaN) Lab and will be likely hiring for a Lab Manager/Clinical Research Coordinator Position. Feel free to inquire if interested in joining the lab!The INMaN laboratory will aim to dissect the emotion and memory functions of the human brain with three complimentary lines of research aimed at: 1) understanding the dynamic organization of neural circuits from single neurons to whole brain networks during emotion and memory processes using human intracranial electrophysiology and functional neuroimaging, 2) modulating the activity and organization of these networks to gain control of emotional experience or enhance memory using direct brain stimulation in humans, and 3) translating these laboratory-based discoveries to neuromodulation therapies that can restore functional behavior in real-world settings to help those suffering with neural disorders.

Doctoral CandidateEmory University Aug 2008 - PresentEmory UniversityMy research focuses on understanding the cognitive and neural basis of memory formation and retrieval of emotionally meaningful events. In particular, I am interested in the functional interaction of brain regions involved in formation and retrieval of autobiographical memory, memory for past events from one’s own life, and in the related topic of how we use elements of our memory to construct simulations of imagined future life events. In addition, I would like to pursue projects aimed at understanding how we dynamically use cognition outside the laboratory in real world, dynamic environments. -
