When you start your research career building products for elementary-school students, you learn early on that centering the student experience is critically important. And it doesn’t matter how childlike you are, you’ll never be able to design from the perspective of an eight-year-old kiddo.So you research, build your design, and test. Then you research more. Then test again, and in all probability, you design again. Only after you’ve fully understood the student can you say that your design is polished enough for release.Seven years have passed since I first got my start as a designer, and I’ve now built products for data analysts, customer service reps, vice presidents of finance, and everybody in between. No matter how my audience changes, though, that first lesson has always stuck with me: Knowing your user comes before everything else.
