Communications Data Investigator
CurrentAs an accredited Communications Data Investigator, I work within the Serious Crime Division to assist both Officers and Staff in the acquisition of communications data, in relation to telecommunications, postal and internet enquiries whilst ensuring compliance with the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) 2016.My role includes assisting in the development information technology and working practices within the unit and the telecommunications, internet and postal industries as a major contribution to the intelligence product at all levels in line with the National Intelligence Model (NIM).I liaise with Senior Investigating Officers (SIO) to assist in the development of strategies on major incidents in respect of telephony and other communications issues, ensuring a directed and cost-effective approach.I provide and assist SIO’s with a strategic assessment and take responsibility for data acquisition relating to dynamic enquiries and ‘Crimes In Action'.In the role, I manage, quality assure and maintain a central record for the Force IPA applications and subsequent reviews, renewals and cancellations.I also provide inputs as a subject matter expert to all our customers in relation to the European Convention for Human Rights (ECHR), data protection, IPA 2016, and associated legislation, providing an insight into the service we provide in respect of investigations, and intelligence gathering around telephony, Internet and postal services.Another aspect of my role is to ensure that the Communications Data Investigation Unit maintains a communications data software system that is both accurate and auditable to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act, and the recommendations of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner's Office (IPCO).
