I am Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Southampton and from 2020 to 2024 I was Head of Department. I lead innovative, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of criminology, technology, and youth justice. My work focuses on developing digital interventions to improve outcomes for young people in the criminal justice system, particularly those who are neurodivergent.Key achievements and current projects:• Leading an interdisciplinary team developing a transformative digital intervention for youth in police custody, combining insights from criminology, anthropology, archaeology, and computer science.• Organizing and leading successful Knowledge Exchange Events, bringing together students, police officers, and youth advocates to co-create solutions for improving youth experiences in the criminal justice system.• Author of "Crime and Psychology: A Critical Perspective" (2nd Edition, Sage, 2020) and co-author of the forthcoming "Precarious Futures: Crime, Technology and Justice" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).• Significant contributor to the Web Science initiative at the University of Southampton, exploring the Web as a social and technical space, including its implications for criminal activity.• Collaborating with Hampshire Police and forces across England and Wales to implement and evaluate innovative custody practices, aiming to improve outcomes for all users through the use of video book technology.• Member of the ESRC Peer Review College and Associate Editor for the journal Criminology and Criminal Justice.My research interests include:• Youth justice and the application of Child First principles• Digital interventions in criminal justice settings• Neurodiversity in the context of youth offending• The impact of relative deprivation on criminal behaviour• Cybercrime and online deviance• The Web as a space for criminal activity and preventionI am committed to breaking down intellectual and conceptual barriers, fostering collaboration between academia, law enforcement, and industry to create meaningful change in the criminal justice system.
