As General Manager of Midco Sports in North Dakota and South Dakota I direct and manage the overall operations. Day-to-day oversight includes: programming, technology, Op Ex and Cap Ex budgeting and implementation, workflow efficiencies, community involvement, recruiting, training and retention of employees, data gathering, analytics and decision making from metrics, multi-platform broadcast strategies, collaboration with partner schools, conferences, event organizations and other Midco departments. I am responsible for all things technical for Midco Sports Network. I lead a team of Technicians, Broadcast Engineers, Master Control Ops and staff TDs that support Midco's Advertising Sales, Midco Marketing and MidcoSN's broadcast equipment. We research, budget, purchase, implement and troubleshoot the tools used to make quality TV, including six Midco studios, four that produce MidcoSN content, two mobile live carts, one 48’ OB trailer, and one Centralized Production van. From newsroom software, where scripts begin, to the transmission of live sporting events, our team covers all of the equipment in between. Examples include: computers, servers, networks, cameras, mics, studios, OB trailers, transmission over fiber or satellite, master control, and more.Since joining Midco I have led technical transitions that include: going from encoding Beta tapes to file format encoding and enterprise transcoding for ad insertion; growing regionally from nine stand-alone edit systems to thirty plus network connected edit systems in six locations with localized shared storage editing; utilizing zip drive backups to now having geo-redundant data center archiving and implementation of a MAM; design of two live production carts; one studio remodel and five studio builds from the ground up, including one master control location move and a full set redesign for MidcoSN’s home studio in Sioux Falls; research, development, project management and implementation of a Centralized Production (CP, REMI, At-Home) model of broadcasting live sporting events in the Midwest; at the same time converting a former SD news station in Lawrence, KS to an HD sports network. During the summer of 2019 I am managing MidcoSN’s Master Control upgrade and an IP network redesign.MidcoSN has grown from broadcasting 1 live sporting event in 2007, to now doing 250 live events on MidcoSN 1 and 2 in the Dakotas and Minnesota, plus 40 live events for MidcoSN Kansas in the Lawrence region.
