Experience as an expert human factors engineer/manager with extensively demonstrated accomplishment in providing hardware and software development teams with timely, accurate, and actionable user-centered design feedback. Currently an occasional human factors consultant on the development of medical and aviation systems and products and on the restructuring of corporate software development processes to effectively incorporate user-centered design. As senior human factors engineer in the Martin Marietta Space Operations Simulator Lab near Denver, worked on the design of the International Space Station habitation module; was responsible for astronaut simulation training to fly the Martin Marietta Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) for Shuttle Mission 51A; also worked on telerobotic systems for Mars rover and space station activities. Created and managed the hardware human factors engineering function for Sun Microsystems (a $10B company in the Silicon Valley, now part of Oracle); designed and built usability labs; hired, managed and mentored staff; developed and evangelized usability/human factors engineering hardware and software development processes; set company policies for user interface design. Worked closely with software engineers, industrial designers, and product engineers to produce industry-leading products that won 5 national design awards. Chaired national (ANSI and SAE) standards working groups and committees. Past Chair of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Computer Systems Technical Group and was Chair of the HFES 1989 Annual Meeting.
