Department of Surgery, Division of Thoracic SurgeryMission:To decrease peri- and postoperative morbidity and mortality, address health care disparities, increase overall patient survival and enhance quality of life for both the patient and caregiver. To facilitate the translation of research discoveries into applications aimed at advancing the clinical effectiveness of thoracic surgical therapeutics and treatment measures that may influence morbidity and mortality to improve overall outcomes in patients with thoracic cancers.Responsibilities: Facilitate the expansion of an ambitious and relevant research agenda to promote the vision, fulfill the mission, and serve the strategic research needs of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. Conduct original research operations and play a major role in the mentorship of pre-/post-doctoral students and junior faculty. Provide leadership and guidance to project teams, senior leaders, junior faculty, and collaborators. Build and promote continual research collaborations with both internal and external partners. Accomplishments:- Expanded the clinical research infrastructure by securing funding and initiating participation in a national multi-institutional thoracic clinical database. - Increased the divisional research profile by increasing publications and scientific presentations by >50%. - Served as faculty research advisor to 25+ pre-/post-doctoral students and junior faculty. Leading to over 30 presentations at scientific conferences (three of which received awards for best presentation on subject matter), resulting in 10 published manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.- Developed extensive collaborative network at regional, national and international levels.

Department of Surgery & Bloomberg School of Public Health,Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery Center for Outcomes Research and Clinical TrialsMission: The JSCOR Surgical Faculty-Student Mentoring Program aims to facilitate collaborative relationships between faculty mentors and student mentees with the overall goal of a mutually beneficial educational experience in clinical research. Responsibilities:Individually pair Bloomberg School of Public Health students with a Johns Hopkins School of Medicine faculty surgeon mentor to create a surgeon-student research team. Guide and assist the team with the design, conduct and analysis of health services research problems using appropriate data sources. Aid the team in setting goals and timelines to achieve a key deliverable as the final thesis with the potential to be published in peer-reviewed journal. Accomplishments:- Guided up to twenty faculty-student research teams from concept to successful completion of thesis project within 11 months. - Several students presented their project at national scientific meetings and submitted manuscript for publication.- Enhanced the research profile for both student and faculty.

Department of Oncology, Division of Cancer BiologyThis role provided the foundation of my clinical and scientific background in translational oncology research and clinical therapeutics while working with the top key opinion leaders and scientific experts in the field of translational epigenetics and clinical oncology. It is here that I learned the power of team synergy and how to drive a clinical concept into practice… and where thinking outside the box was encouraged.Responsibilities:Provide epidemiological and biostatistical support to the entire division. Design and conduct of retrospective and prospective studies. Manage large databases. Management and coordination multiple of preclinical and clinical trials. Accomplishments:- Identified and validated a group of molecular biomarkers (APC, RASSf1a, H-cadherin, and p16) that predict disease recurrence in patients with stage I NSCLC; published in the New England Journal of Medicine. - Co-author and lead biostatistician for a phase II trial of DNA demethylating agents, Vidaza (Azacitidine), and HDAC inhibitor, Entinostat, for treatment of patients with advanced treatment resistant, NSCLC; published in Cancer Discovery.- Designed and conducted the first 5-year, annual, longitudinal CT screening study to evaluate feasibility in early stage lung cancer and lung disease in HIV-infected patients. Cultivated a relationship with each patient which resulted in a 92% retention rate. - Primary epidemiologist and biostatistician for AACR national multi-institution collaborative initiative- Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) Dream Team Johns Hopkins Site (2010-2013).- Primary epidemiologist and biostatistician for the NIH multi-institutional collaborative grant- Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Lung Cancer Johns Hopkins site (2005-2012).- Critical role in preparing annual progress reports for AACR-SU2C and NIH-SPORE which resulted in consecutive annual funding continuation.

Department of Epidemiology, Division of Cancer EpidemiologyInvestigated the relationship between active and passive smoking and the incidence of colon and rectal cancers. Performed complex statistical analyses using data from Washington County, MD cohort, consisting of over 90,000 subjects. Accomplishments:- Published manuscript, presentation at national epidemiologic conference.

Department of Oncology, Division of Patient & Family ServicesIn this role I coordinated patient-centered outcomes studies that focused on psychosocial issues related to quality of life, psychological distress, and end of life problem-solving skills education for cancer patients and caregivers. My experiences working directly with cancer patients and their family members were profound and has been my source of inspiration ever since.Responsibilities:Monitor all aspects of the research protocols within the division, including IRB approval and continuation, patient recruitment, obtaining informed consent, data collection and database management. Maintain large psychosocial screening database. Accomplishments:- Co-authored manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals.- Contributed to the development and validation of a new psychological distress screening instrument in a cancer patient population; Brief Symptom Inventory 18.- Multiple presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
