The mitral valve is the heart valve which prevents backflow of blood when the heart pumps blood around the body. It has certain key geometric components, which can alter during disease to prevent its efficient function; the result can be heart failure and/or surgery. However, it is unclear how individual geometric components might combine in the development of such failure. The aim of this study is to perform experimental in vitro testing on mitral valves, dissected from porcine hearts, to assess how geometric alterations limit its ability to prevent regurgitation. This is investigated using a test rig available in the biomedical engineering laboratory. In addition, I am implementing improvements to the experimental rig, which is expected to lead to easier set up and improved results accuracy due to being able to replicate the human heart and common alterations more correctly. Moreover, the set up will be less invasive on the sub-valvular apparatus, hence preserving its anatomical behaviour. Key skills:Working with Biohazard Dissection and suturing3D Printing

Interdisciplinary initiative involving students, early career researchers, and clinicians working together on solving a surgical problem. The Vascular surgery team is investigating a decline in patients' kidney function in the years after endovascular surgery is performed to treat aortic disease. The surgery involves inserting a graft in the diseased part of the aorta. The main interest is understanding haemodynamic behaviour and biomechanical properties of the aorta after grafts are inserted and how these properties can lead to the above mentioned health problems. We have designed a device able to mimic the natural movements of the aorta. This way, turbulent flow will be less likely to be generated, and the possibility of the aortic wall to fail due to fatigue, or become frail and cause the graft to slip from its initial position is minimised.
