About Cristina A. Bejan, Phd

An award-winning Romanian-American author, educator, theatre artist, and spoken word poet, my successful portfolio career has taken me around the world and I am delighted to now be working, living and creating in my birth state, Colorado. I have published books in all of my genres (history, poetry, playwriting) and have collaborated on professional theatre productions with Broadway director Lila Neugebauer and actors Rosamund Pike (UK) and Maia Morgenstern (Romania), among many incredible creatives. My plays have been performed in 4 countries and my hit play DISTRICTLAND was bought for TV development in 2015. My writing explores themes of identity, belonging, trauma and resistance. As a graduate of Wadham College (University of Oxford's most progressive college), I am passionate about LGBTQIA+ & Equal Rights, as well as access to education. My graduate degrees were fully funded by merit-based Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships, and many grants. To my knowledge I am Romania's only Rhodes Scholar. For 4 years I worked as a professor of Theatre and History at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where I was a Finalist for the Faculty Senate Teaching Award 2021. MSU Denver is a majority Latinx and immigrant student population. As the child of an immigrant who fled Romania's brutal communist dictatorship, being part of this learning community was the most meaningful teaching experience of my life. I have now joined the University of Denver in a teaching and research capacity with a focus on the Holocaust. In addition to my MSt & PhD in Modern History from Oxford and BA (Honors) from Northwestern, I hold certifications in social justice facilitation from Creative Strategies for Change (Denver) and in Theatre of the Oppressed from the Washington DC Coalition for Theatre & Social Justice. I am the Executive Director of Bucharest Inside the Beltway, a multicultural arts and culture platform that I co-founded in 2014 to promote local and international inclusive voices in the arts. I am a member of several professional associations that support women, authors, and playwrights. I serve as an advocate for Project HOPE, The Alex Fund, NAMI & RAINN.A 2x fellow at the Wilson Center, I am a guest lecturer at the Foreign Service Institute and the Romanian-American University (Bucharest), I serve as Vice-President of ARCHER (American Romanian Coalition for Human and Equal Rights, Chicago), and founding Advisory Board Member of Romanian diaspora non-profit Alianța (based in Washington DC).
