• Specialist technical lead for the multi-disciplinary development of electric traction motors (both axial and radial flux machines).

• Invented a unique topology of axial-flux motor having a yokeless stator and distributed winding.• Developed an in-depth parametrised analytical model to accurately predict and optimise the novel motor’s performance across its full range of speed and torque.

• Led the design, simulation and optimisation of bespoke high-power linear synchronous machines and associated power supply & motion control systems for a diverse range of applications (gaining a deep understanding of Field-Orientated Control and associated Space-Vector Modulation schemes).• Notably, conducted a design review and verification of the original Hyperloop One Propulsion Open-Air Test (POAT) motor.

• Designed and tested linear synchronous motors and developed novel linear motor power supply and control strategies. Notably, was responsible for the control scheme for the preliminary design of a linear-motor-actuated advanced weapons elevator for the US Navy's CVN-78 aircraft carrier.• Co-invented a control method for segmented long-stator linear motors, with patents subsequently granted in Australia, Canada, Ghana, South Africa and the United States (WO/2007/017723).

• Researched methods of mathematically modelling and controlling linear synchronous motors and authored several academic journal and conference papers.• Was appointed head tutor for the Control I, Control II, Mathematics II, Mathematics III and Signals & Systems II undergraduate courses at various times, and mentored small groups of first-year students for the Engineering Design I course.• Undertook numerous commercial projects, including: - designing and testing a dc motor positioning control system for the actuation of a novel continuously-variable transmission for the automotive industry; - experimentally determining the temperature rise characteristics of several traction-motor blower motors to ascertain if they were fit for purpose; - simulating and redesigning a level controller for a problematic set of cascading froth-flotation tanks; and - estimating energy savings for a compact fluorescent light swap-out programme trialled in several townships.

• Lectured sections of the Control I course.• Compiled the laboratory material for the Control II final-year elective course.

• Conducted spectral analysis of electrical measurements to determine the flow of harmonic power in several dual-pinion grinding mills exhibiting excessive vibration and simulated the parametric excitation of torsional resonance in the drive trains by gear meshing (enabling mechanical remedies to be found).

• Programmed an object-orientated call processing engine.• Designed the high-level man-machine interface for a low-cost mobile phone.

• Installed a local computer network, file server & Internet gateway, and provided ad hoc IT support.• Assisted in the logging and collating of experimental data for a stope-face cooling study under the Deepmine Research Programme.
