Out Of The Box Festival

Out of the Box is a biennial festival for children 8 years and under, held at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). The festival takes pride in its history as a national leader in programming for young children, nurturing children's creativity and imagination.In 1998 I was delighted to direct a group of young students in a performance called "My Big Backyard" based on picture book by Jeannie Baker "Where the Forest Meets the Sea". This was an incredible experience to see the cast of children create and perform their interpretation of this classic Australian Picture Book. Out of the Box is crafted to celebrate and support learning, play, curiosity and discovery for children and their families as they learn and grow together. Out of the Box acknowledges and celebrates the value and importance of the arts in education and life-learning.Since the festival's inception in 1992, QPAC has provided national leadership in the area of early childhood arts education through Out of the Box. The festival is committed to informing and inspiring babies, children, parents, grandparents, care-givers, clinicians and teachers. It is built on the simple foundation that children matter and that arts rich experiences lead to a sense of unfolding discovery in children and adults alike.

Initially employed as a workshop facilitator for Backbone Youth Arts, formerly known as La Boite Youth Arts in 1995, I conducted drama workshops for young children aged 5 - 7 years. In 1997 continuing as a workshop facilitator for Backbone, I broadened my skills by working with children 5 - 7 years and developed a performance Book Gig "The Hunt" based on Narelle Oliver's picture book. This was an excellent opportunity to develop and create with young children a very memorable performance.Backbone Youth Arts now sits as the only metropolitan based multi-arts organisation with the specific mandate of working with young people in Queensland.
