Finally, from my study in Stirling where I discovered my interest in AI, I start to work full time as a developer in a Berlin based AI startup company. They were two years into developing a system that, at the time I joined, aimed to answer customer inqueries automatically. Things were still fluid as the company tried to navigate and find its position on the market, but there were many sessions that left me inspired by the creativity that existed in this startup.My focus was on an AngularJS codebase that had been developed since they founded the company. Most of the diagrams and charts were developed using D3.js that I quickly began to appreciate. We wanted to give insights into what the AI machine had understood and how it had answered customer inquieres over time. In situations where answers were wrong, users were given the opportunity to train the model. The AngularJS application was not built by a toolkit when I started. We first created a build process around Gulp and switched later to Webpack. I managed to reduce the load and first meaningful paint time significantly during my employment at parlamind.I also took part in various 3rd party integrations such as Zendesk Support and Freshdesk where we provided a small user interface that would assist customer support agents answer different types of inquiries. The interfaces were built using AngularJS and Svelte. I was also tasked to create the user interface for parlamind’s chat bot application. It supported dynamic brand themes and voice communication in cases where the end user preferred talking to a person. I developed it using React given the small footprint it has on browsers compared to AngularJS.

My position at Audacia enabled me to work on web applications from various industries; education, car sharing, energy and car retail. All applications were developed in .NET (C#) and web browsers (Javascript/HTML/CSS).The web applications were normally developed using ASP.NET with client side libraries such as Bootstrap and Knockout.js. I did however have the opportunity to develop a mobile application that were made available to the public. The mobile app was ported to different platforms using Apache Cordova. It was developed using AngularJS, OnsenUI and ASP.NET Web API.

My third rotation took place in the exploration organization. It was a small IT department having the responsiblities of prioritizing and collecting requirements of exploration related applications. I had primarily three tasks. First of all, I collected information related to business continuity from offices abroad. This included mapping the IT setup and identifying dependencies between well locations and offices. My second task was oriented towards application portfolio optimization. I looked at discontinuing applications and optimizing the number of licenses. Lastly, I contributed in the process of establishing a new office in New Zealand. The main responsibility was to coordinate IT setup and solutions that was required by this new office.

For my second rotation I joined the GIS department. The department delivered services on different applications to the rest of Statoil. However, my focus was on ArcGIS related products such as ArcMap and ArcGIS Server. I did some development, such as a HTML web map for the marine infrastructure on the Norwegian continental shelf, but Statoil was in a freeze during my rotation so my main effort was on maintenance on existing systems. This included upgrading various applications and geo databases. Apart from being in a product life cycle team, I also participated at the service desk. Customers had issues and problems that had to be solved through troubleshooting and guidance.

My first rotation as part of the graduate scheme in Statoil started off in the ERP add-on department. The position focused primarily on ABAP programming, in which the objective was to provide custom functionality in Statoil's legacy systems. Most of the coding was done in two projects that had a different purpose and team synergy. In one of the projects I experienced how important it is to have a passionate scrum master. Altogether, I got a better understanding of the developer role and the agile manifesto.
