My work focuses on the College of Agriculture's efforts to grow institutional capacity, teaching, and scholarship relevant to urban food systems in Southern California and nationally.Previously, I was associate professor of entomology and state extension specialist at University of Wisconsin, Madison recognized for work with Integrated Pest Management implementation in corn, soy, wheat and alfalfa cropping systems. I spent 2011-12 as visiting professor with Teagasc Agriculture and Food Development Authority, Wexford Ireland, learning about effects of organic, conventional and mixed cultivation practices on soil microbial community structure and nematode abundance in vegetable crops. My background includes 3 years in the non-profit sector as education specialist on a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Integrated Farming Systems grant awarded to the Bio-Integral Resource Center of Berkeley, CA. I am trained in Organic Crop and Processing Inspector training courses (USDA National Organic Program) with the International Organic Inspectors Association. Goals: Work with faculty, students, community partners, funding agencies and donor organizations to develop urban agriculture curriculum competencies in post-secondary education, design and teach an urban agriculture minor degree program, and establish a Southern California Urban Agriculture Center connecting Cal Poly Pomona College of Agriculture to the greater Los Angeles area. The Center will provide academic training, experiential learning, community involvement, networking and leadership enhancement of Cal Poly Pomona students preparing for careers in plant science, education/teaching, business and community development in urban agriculture.
