I have 35+ years of experience in IT that ranges from executive and strategic management to system design and development. My current interest is in engineering solutions using deep learning neural networks and high performance computing in astronomy.I manage a team of information technology support specialists at the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii, Manoa in support of the IfA's astronomy researchers including faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. Some interesting problems I get to work on include using convolutional neural networks to perform spectropolarimetric inversions of the solar magnetic field, using CNNs to detect and characterize moving objects in telescope images, applying AI/ML to cybersecurity (ZTA), systems engineering to reliably transfer tens to hundreds of TB of data over intercontinental distances using 100G research networks, and efficient time and spatial queries for very large (>billion row) data sets.Before coming to the IfA I was the IT Director at Simpson University in Redding, CA and prior to that I co-founded a semiconductor photonics test and measurement startup. I started my career as a UNIX and C developer working for a small startup then Unisys for several years before becoming a freelance software engineer, system architect and consultant.I received my Master of Science in Software Engineering from Cal State Fullerton and BA in Philosophy from Westmont College.I have extensive technical experience with C/C++/Python, ML/AI, HPC/MPI, databases, TCP/IP, Linux, data analytics, business process engineering, real-time, embedded scientific and manufacturing systems, image processing, spectrophotometry, spectropolarimetry, and semiconductor automated test equipment.
