Welcome to my LinkedIn profile! I'm James Ryan, a cybersecurity executive driven by a relentless pursuit of improving cybersecurity performance by reducing risk, cost, and friction. I've come to refer to these three dimensions as the "RCF Triad," a concept that I've used as a tool for governing and managing cyber risk with equipoise.I'm here to connect with new clients, fellow leaders, trailblazers, innovators, suppliers, and collaborators.While I won't name specific clients for confidentiality reasons, I've had the privilege of helping the who’s who of the Fortune 500, governments, countries, and the SMB across the public sector, military and defense industrial base, higher education, energy, financial, telecommunications, and software/cloud/tech sectors. With an aim to "ring the bell" about the "world wide weakness" of poorly performing cyber, I have 1) appeared on TV, magazines, radio shows, 2) published articles, 3) influenced NIST publications, and 4) participated in founding and growing the cross-disciplined cyber security summit in Minnesota. My accomplishments in cyber have not been mine alone. The teams and colleagues in my sphere are rockstars, navigate complexity, debate issues, drive hard, adapt, and achieve — often in uncharted territories. I have engaged in projects ranging from two days to seven years. I engage as one or more of the following types of CISO as the need arises: Board-Level CISO, Executive-Level CISO, Consulting CISO, Researching CISO, Implementing CISO, Operating CISO, and Fractional CISO.I am at my best when 1) navigating situations that seem impossible or have not been done before and 2) when poor performance in one or more of the RCF Triad is obvious but the root causes are unknown. I'll get a question like, "We have a new regulations and hard deadline that seems impossible to meet, can you help? or "We are constantly getting breached and spend is so high already, can you help?" or "Something doesn't feel right. Could you check it out and tell me what's wrong?"Beyond having deep technology & business experience (table stakes), my strengths are creative and critical thinking (sword), mental toughness (shield), tenacity to get over the finish line, and a collaborative style.
