About Da Yang
My name is Da Yang. I am currently an assistant professor at King's College, where I teach mechanical and engineering-related classes. I obtained my Ph.D. from Clarkson University in May 2022 and worked as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Colorado Boulder, CIRES, and Clarkson University from 2022 to 2024.My research interests lie in fluid dynamics, employing both computational and experimental methods. I am particularly focused on characterizing and modeling flow and the interactions of substances within it, such as turbulence, particle transport, and mass transport. My past work involved applying and validating computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in real-world scenarios, where I frequently utilized turbulence measurement techniques, particle and gas analysis, and statistical methods.In my most recent project, I concentrated on assessing the performance of aircraft-based sampling systems for atmospheric studies. This project, part of the Technological Innovation Into Iodine and GV Environmental Research (TI3GER) initiative, offered me a valuable opportunity to extensively apply CFD. I used CFD to study flow features, particle and gas transport in an aircraft-based sampling system, and conducted experiments to validate simulations. The challenge of verifying, comparing, interpreting, and applying simulation results has been a particularly enjoyable aspect of my work, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my experience with the next generation.

I have been working as a teaching assistant for the experimental class of the mechanical engineering department in Clarkson University. I teach the required background knowledge and prerequisites of my experiments and instruct students to complete these experiments step by step in class through a designed curriculum. Following lecture, I answer questions about theory behind the experiments and assist students with data analysis related questions to complete their reports during my office hours. The experiments I teach involve learning general measurement devices, stress measurement devices, flow related measurement devices and data analysis using Matlab.

The position allow me to focus on research to conduct CFD simulations to quantitatively understand the transmission of condensable vapors and ions in a laminar flow inlet we developed. We also plan to develop heating on the inlet to avoid ice formation in flight, and evaluate the CFD simulations with measurements of transmission in Boulder, and at the USAFA wind tunnel.
