I came to law enforcement through a circuitous route with the underlying theme of service to others. I began my professional life with the American Red Cross as a trainer in whole blood collections where I developed, implemented, and delivered training. I was promoted and moved to the National Headquarters in Washington, DC where I eventually transitioned into Quality Assurance, which taught me auditing and compliance. Life took a major turn at this point when I decided to leave the American Red Cross and work for an animal protection group. They were developing a new division within the organization dedicated to working cooperatively with corporations and finding ways for everyone to benefit from the relationship. I started on the ground floor (quite literally) and eventually moved to Director of Corporate Affairs. It was here that I honed my negotiation skills as well as my ability to creatively overcome zero-sum attitudes to find those common connections. While I enjoyed my work and was fortunate enough to travel internationally for my job, I had been interested in law enforcement since my teenage years and made the decision that it was “now or never.” I started as a street officer, was eventually promoted to detective and from there, to sergeant. I learned (and continue to learn) a great deal about leadership, communication, investigations, creative problem solving, and working with disparate groups to achieve common goals. Policing has taught me how to make decisions, work with ambiguity, and to assess problems in place while figuring out a way forward - skills that are transferable to just about any profession.
