I am the postdoctoral research associate for The Sciences of Ageing and The Culture of Youth at King's College London. As Impact and Public Engagement Officer I am developing creative ways to share research and influence perceptions of ageing.My PhD research explored depictions of disability, class, and resistance in contemporary austerity Britain, with a focus on twenty-first century literature and film. It was funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council through WRoCAH. I have created two documentaries, presented papers at interdisciplinary conferences, and was selected for the TV PhD scheme run by the TV Foundation. Between 2013 and 2019 I worked for a number of disability charities, gaining experience in qualitative research and project management.

Documentary FilmmakerGlasgow Medical Humanities Network Feb 2023 - Jun 2023The Wellcome Trust funded my second documentary The Sick Man of Europe? Health, Protest, and Community in Glasgow. The project responds to media portrayals of Glasgow’s poor public health profile which focus on individual behaviours and “choices”, with little reference to the unique historical context of the city’s regional deprivation. Seeking to rebalance this narrative, the film brings together interviews with public health experts, academics, and members of the community alongside footage held at the National Library of Scotland’s Moving Image Archive. The documentary considers how communities have come together to protest, create networks of support, and reclaim their representation.The film will be screened at the Kinning Park Complex in Glasgow where the audience will be invited to share their perspectives and lived experiences.

In conversation with disabled actors, presenters, and filmmakers, the documentary explores the history of ableism in British film and television as well as the socio-political implications of misrepresentation, the ongoing practice of “cripping up”, what progress has been made and what still needs to be achieved. The film contributed to the BFI’s Press Reset campaign and launched their 2021 Busting the Bias festival. -
