• Designed the synthesis of metal alloys, oxides, phosphides and chalcogenides nanoparticles with control of growth kinetics, morphology, and chemical composition using air-free colloidal synthesis techniques; the first to synthesize CoMnP nanoparticles from the solution-phase (published in JACS and cited 70 times within one year).• Optimized and scaled up the synthesis of metal chalcogenide quantum dots for aerogel assembly; fabricated conducting quantum dot films using sol-gel methods, resulting in >10 times photocurrent response improvement relative to non-crosslinked particles; assembled hybrid quantum dot aerogels with high surface area, modified surface, and enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity.• Improved the preparation of electrocatalyst inks and evaluated their electro-chemical properties, revealing synergistic improvements in ternary metal phosphide phases relative to binary phases.• Constructed a diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform cell for in-situ study of surface active sites on metal phosphide nanoparticles; investigated the surface evolution of metal phosphides nanomaterials under catalytic oxygen evolution condition revealing a deactivation process.• Present in ACS and MRS annual national meetings; won 3 conference awards (MCS meeting, ECS Detroit chapter, WSU research symposium) for outstanding oral and poster presentations.• Expanded group research to 2 new areas involving electrocatalytic and photocatalytic applications; assisted advisor in preparation of grant proposals that resulted in NSF funding ($300k and $410k); mentored 5 junior researchers, guiding each with creative, independent projects that resulted in research fellowships, admission into top graduate programs, and publications in high-impact scientific journals.
