Shirley Chisholm reminds us “service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.” Cultivating collaboration and community are integral parts of my professional persona and intellectual legacy as a Black feminist creative scholar. I continue to value the role administrators play in sustaining academic communities and establishing institutional partnerships. As Interim Director of the African American and Africana Studies Program, my leadership role includes fundraising and using my previous administrative experiences to architecture an interdisciplinary Africana Studies center, entitled the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies at the University of Kentucky. I have enjoyed my getting to know funding partners, campus leaders, and change agents throughout Kentucky. By building strategic and stable partnerships, greater attention is given to the research and professional mission of the African American and Africana Studies Program and the faculty individual faculty affiliates within the Commonwealth Institute for Black Studies.
