Research:- I studied images that transitioned from books to the material world in Colonial Latin America. This research on intermediality continued and further developed the topic of a book that I edited prior to coming to the University of Glasgow: 'Emblems in Colonial Ibero-America: To the New World on the Ship of Theseus' (Glasgow Emblem Studies, 2017), which received very positive reviews (Renaissance Quarterly, Colonial Latin America Review, Print Quarterly, Bulletin of Spanish Visual Studies and Emblematica Journal);Admin:- I obtained a funding from the Learning and Teaching Development Fund to implement a platform for digital exhibitions in collaboration with the Glasgow University Library, using Google Arts and Culture;Teaching:- Text and image studies, Brazilian literature, Latin America colonial history.

Project Director, Project IRIS (Iconographic Repertoire Identification System), funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (CsF, CAPES, BJT-A);Objective: - To lead a team (10 participants in Brazil and the UK) that created a technological solution to assign iconographic information to 'categories' from controlled vocabularies used to index images in special collections ('concept-based image classification and retrieval'), such as Iconclass. Beyond improving the results of searches in large digital collections, the project aimed at indexing iconographic repertoires from the 16th-18th centuries, in order to facilitate the identification of iconographic sources (books, prints) of artworks produced in Colonial Latin America. Results: - The project developed a new and discrete alphanumerical code that could be attributed to controlled vocabularies, in order to allow a more precise indexation and retrieval of images or texts in large digital collections (allowing the user to make a specific queries, such as 'a woman with a flower in her right hand', in any language);- The project also developed the 'IRIS-Iconclass protocol', a set of questions regarding a visual object that could guide untrained indexers/cataloguers to establish a minimum and constant volume of information (granularity) to each digital object;- IRIS allowed for the identification of 3 hitherto unidentified paintings (14th-16th centuries) at the Museum D. João VI;- Finally, the project established a partnership with the National Library of Brazil and the University of Glasgow, which resulted in the interchange of UK students to work in the project.Teaching:- I taught Image Theory in the postgraduate program in Visual Arts, as well as courses in early-modern iconography.
