About Dan Ankeles
In December of 2022, I was sworn in as a state representative from Brunswick in the Maine Legislature. The central area of Brunswick I represent is called House District 100, which includes downtown, the former naval airbase, Jordan avenue, most of Bowdoin College, half of Cooks Corner and most of the neighborhoods along Mere Point and Harpswell Roads. As a member of the Legislature, I combine my experience in local government with the institutional knowledge I've accrued over the last decade working in and around the State House. The fusion of state and local advocacy has been essential to solving problems. It helps with coalition building, understanding stakeholders and avoiding common legislative pitfalls. Until November of 2021, I served as a legislative aide in the Maine House Democratic Office. I helped members with constituent services, press and media, research, public hearing testimony, floor speeches and shepherding bills through the legislative process. My specialty was writing speeches and OpEds, and I was often copy editing my colleagues' work. I am familiar with effective lawmaking strategy, parliamentary procedure and the many state agencies, advocacy groups, non-profits and others that play a major role in civic life. In November of 2018, I was elected an at-large town councilor in Brunswick, Maine with 63 percent of the vote. Brunswick is a town of about 21,000 residents in Maine's southern Midcoast region. I concluded my two terms at the end of 2023.Before my staff work in the Legislature, I spent two election cycles as a regional field organizer for the Maine House Democrats. Each cycle I was given a slate of candidates to help with their campaigns. In 2010, the worst state legislative year for Democrats in years, half my candidates won, including two in open Republican districts. In 2012, all of my candidates won their races. In 2011, I was the York County Regional Organizer for the Maine People's Alliance for the campaign to block the repeal of same-day voter registration. I built a volunteer network that allowed us to exceed our goals for signature gathering - a network we deployed to win every town in York County.I am also a former public radio producer with a background in print and radio journalism. My focus was on public policy and politics at all levels of government, but I also worked on business and international news.I am proficient in German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese but likely would need some refreshers at this point.
Listed skills include Politics, Public Policy, Journalism, Government, and 2 others.
