About Dan Atkins

With a career spanning over two decades in policing, I’ve enjoyed a variety of roles. Promoted to Inspector in 2018, I’ve consistently served on the frontline, managing teams across emergency response, community-based units, custody centres, and specialist areas like digital investigations, overseeing over 50 professionals. As the senior operational officer, I’ve led initial responses to critical incidents, making pivotal decisions that ensure the safety and wellbeing of officers, staff, and the public. My experience has equipped me with a unique blend of crisis management, leadership, and investigative skills. However, it’s my deep commitment to mediation and conflict resolution that has shaped my current focus. Beyond my operational duties, I’ve always been deeply involved in the people side of the organisation and this lead to me becoming a leadership coach. My work as a workplace investigator and grievance assessor highlighted the profound impact of effective conflict resolution, inspiring me to become an accredited workplace mediator. I’m passionate about creating environments where people feel heard, valued, and understood. Through mediation, I’ve helped resolve workplace grievances and community conflicts, focusing not just on resolving issues but on transforming relationships and fostering positive work cultures. My background might suggest a ‘by-the-book’ approach and whilst my years in policing have provided me with a disciplined and structured approach, I pride myself on being adaptable, open to new ideas, and collaborative, with a leadership style that balances authority with empathy and innovation. Early career experience in sales and management within retail, and construction also equips me with private sector insight. Those who know me best would describe me as calm and straightforward, and a no-nonsense and sometimes unconventional thinker. I’m driven by strong personal values and a desire to help others, preferring to lead by example rather than authority. I approach challenges with meticulous attention to detail and a creative mind-set, always looking for innovative solutions that align with my core principles and I’m committed to seeing things through to the end.I enjoy football, paddle boarding and spending as much time as I can in nature. I value quiet moments, believing they make me better at what I do.If you’re an HR professional or business owner looking for a grounded, practical, and results-driven workplace mediator, feel free to get in touch to learn more about my approach to mediation.
