Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, Enrolled Actuary with over 20 years of retirement plan experience, primarily focused on single employer defined benefit pension plans.Prior to launching Atkinson Retirement Consulting LLC, I served as the chief actuary for R&M. The collaborative nature of my work with the other actuaries at R&M made it abundantly clear that more voices will lead to better ideas. This allowed for my clients to never miss out on an opportunity. Lump sum windows were enacted when discount rates were favorable; annuities were purchased for participants which allowed for the most efficient use of resources to reduce PBGC premiums; contributions were accelerated in advance of changing tax laws; and surprises were avoided, as a team of highly qualified actuaries -all with unique skills - was always on top of the latest development. What I brought to this team was an attention to the technical details of pension regulations along with the creativity to best utilize these regulations in a way that would benefit my clients. Prior to joining R&M, I spent 3 years with Mercer. In my brief time with Mercer, I was able to gain exposure to larger pension plans ($1B+). I also had the opportunity to act as a liaison between offices and serve as market operations leader for the Boston office. Most importantly, I made a number of contacts and friends that have helped me to become a better actuary & consultant.My career began with 10 years at Fidelity. I started out answering participant phone calls and completing benefit calculations, ultimately learning the pension rules and working my way through exams to become lead consultant on some larger cases. During this time, I was able to witness (and play a small role in) the creation of a pension administration business as well as the remarkably fast growth from a small consulting firm into a major player in the pension actuarial world.
