Due primarily to our over-expanding when under capitalized, and further complicated by a dramatic downturn in the economy in 2008-2009, we eventually lost the business along with a large percentage of our personal assets. What a success story, right? Still, the lessons we learned through all that were literally priceless. Firstly, NEVER go into business without at least forming a LLC or incorporating. This would have protected not only my business, but also my personal finances, and most importantly, my family. I never--ever take success for granted. I now know that, in business--especially sales & marketing, you MUST work--though planned and competent, with a true sense of urgency. We also learned that, to really grow a business in sales, one must become a true leader of a sales force. It is not enough to "manage." We must LEAD them to become successful, disciplined, to a great extent self-reliant consistent producers. That is multiplying one's efforts in any business. And this demands consistency with a process--while when needed, flexible in our methodology.

We were privileged to work with some of the greatest, long-time faithful/committed people we'd ever met. However, it was here that I realized that I was not very good at "splitting" my time-loyalties. Due to some crushing medical debt from all the surgeries, I went back into business "bi-vocationally." For a while, we did incredibly well; however, due to there being such a demand from both the church needs and our business, we were less than successful--based on our goals and business plan. In April, 2007, I resigned from the church and went full-time in the business.

Rather than working with five high schools over four different towns/cities, we were able to focus on one high school in this one town, and the results were truly exciting. Here too we led a phenomenal staff of youth sponsors/counselors--as well as some talented teachers, and saw a great impact over those years.

We left business in January, 1990 to work full-time in ministry--leading a fantastic staff of youth sponsors/counselors. While this was a huge cut financially, it was many-times-over well worth it--having the privilege of seeing hundreds of teens impacted by the work and ministry. Now many of these--stretched out literally all over the globe are now impacting others.

I was fortunate to lead a splendid team of managers and salespeople--having outlets in four states, Through both our successes and failures over those years, I was able to grow exceptionally in both people and leadership skills. I was privileged to work with some of the best business and sales-leadership minds of that era, and many of those lessons and developed skills have benefited us for almost three decades.
