I served five years as an organizer, with the following duties: • New local organizing in over 45 campaigns in public schools with a focus on education support professionals (teaching assistants, secretaries, custodians, bus drivers), and a focus on part-time, adjunct college faculty. American Federation of Teachers & Teamsters). I never lost a competitive election in higher education against the AFT. • I worked in existing locals with low membership or leadership issues on organizational development. • I organized for contract negotiations, and supported locals on strike, contentious bargaining, or subcontracting crises. Responsible for working with elected leaders in dozens of local Associations, recruiting members and developing local recruitment plans, as well as recruiting new leaders and supporting their development. • I was a trainer at the 2009 NEA UniServ Academy training new staff representatives in the application of practical organizing. I forged relationships with outside unions through a labor education program for trades apprentices, Jobs With Justice contacts, and the Illinois Labor History Society. For two years I was a UniServ Director with responsibility to 11 locals, representing over 2,000 members in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago. Locals included teachers and support staff. My duties included member representation, collective bargaining, contract enforcement, delivering resources from state and national affiliates to locals and overall organizational development. I was responsible for leadership support, recruiting, and training. I was responsible for membership recruitment and membership plan.
