ESRC Research Secondment. Interviewed former ministers (Lords and MPs) about their roles and how to improve government; developed a database of data on UK ministers since 1945; provided an introductory Stata tutorial; wrote a paper on how to prepare for becoming Secretary of State.

I was based primarily on the Whitehall Monitor project and also on a project relating to the future of decentralisation in skills policy. Within these roles my main responsibilities were:1. Working within the Communications team at ISER, I gained excellent experience in a busy research environment and all aspects of social and economic research. My role and responsibilities were:1. Maintaining and developing the evidence-for-policymakers website Society Central2. Assisting on various research projects with staff at ISER, such as a reappraisal of the methodology for accounting of illegal drugs in the national accounts; data management and cleaning for the Innovation Panel Study; and research into the ethnicity and religion of Parliamentary Candidates.3. A research assistant for Prof. Baldur Thorhallsson and the Centre for Small State Studies, I worked on a project regarding Iceland's affairs with the USA (and, related, Europe as a whole), and its relation to wider theory in small state studies. This is in two parts.1. Working with large amounts of economic data over an 80 year period, and multiple data sets, to create a cleaner data set and descriptive graphs of Iceland's import/export activity to be used in publication and in teaching materials.2. Literature reviews and original qualitative research regarding Iceland's diplomatic, social and cultural relationship with the United States around 2006-2013.At the end of the assistantship I had delivered an original database of economic data, produced a text for publication, developed graphs to display our data, and produced an extensive source list of secondary research.An example of this research is here: http://www.irpa.is/article/view/1591/pdf_335

I helped run, design and analyse a survey into student preferences on a new University building, the Student Services Hub. The responsibilities included:1. Designing and administering the survey2. Analysing the data to capture the most amount of information3. Reporting the results to the Project Implementation group. We successfully ran the survey with approximately 700 respondents, and compiled a 94 page report containing both quantitative and qualitative data. We reinforced this research with qualitative interviews, and I personally wrote a large report on collecting customer feedback, based on an extensive literature review. Towards the end of the project, we delivered a presentation on the findings to the main stakeholders for the new building, and were able to answer all questions they had.

I oversaw a team of up to 7 in the daily running of a busy retail shop, and was also involved in the interview process for new applicants.
