About Dan Devine

I'm an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton. I'm also an Associate Editor at the academic journals 'Public Opinion Quarterly' and 'Journal of European Public Policy' and an Associate Member of Nuffield College (University of Oxford). I was previously a Career Development Fellow at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford. I have previously worked at the Open Society European Policy Institute, Institute for Social and Economic Research, the Institute for Government, the University of Iceland, and the University of Southampton. I am adept at using a range of research methods - both quantitative and qualitative - but specialise in quantitative analysis.My research interests are in public opinion and attitudes, British politics, and quantitative methods. I study what people think of politics and why that matters.My research is funded by a range of organisations, including Universities, government and third-sector organisations. I try and engage my academic work with policy.

    A research assistant for Prof. Baldur Thorhallsson and the Centre for Small State Studies, I worked on a project regarding Iceland's affairs with the USA (and, related, Europe as a whole), and its relation to wider theory in small state studies. This is in two parts.1. Working with large amounts of economic data over an 80 year period, and multiple data sets, to create a cleaner data set and descriptive graphs of Iceland's import/export activity to be used in publication and in teaching materials.2.     I helped run, design and analyse a survey into student preferences on a new University building, the Student Services Hub. The responsibilities included:1. Designing and administering the survey2. Analysing the data to capture the most amount of information3. Reporting the results to the Project Implementation group. We successfully ran the survey with approximately 700 respondents, and compiled a 94 page report containing both quantitative and qualitative data. We reinforced this research with qualitative interviews, and I personally wrote a large report on collecting customer feedback, based on an extensive literature review. Towards the end of the project, we delivered a presentation on the findings to the main stakeholders for the new building, and were able to answer all questions they had.
