Dan Johnson currently serves as the Struggle Well Regional Director for Region 4 (NC, SC, TN, KY) for the Boulder Crest Foundation. Struggle Well is a prevention focused program based on the science of Posttraumatic Growth. By partnering with first responder agencies, the Boulder Crest Foundation, through Struggle Well, is fundamentally changing public safety culture form the inside-out. Struggle Well training is guided by two objectives: normalizing the struggles that are part of every first responder’s life and democratizing their ability to Struggle Well.Prior to joining the Boulder Crest Foundation, Dan served the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (NC) from 1995 until the time of his retirement on May 1, 2024. He was promoted to his final MCSO rank in 2015 and was a Major assigned as the Division Commander for Courts when he retired. He is a 1993 graduate of The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Law/Criminal Justice. In addition, he is a graduate of the 218th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National AcademyHe previously served as the Division Commander (Major) for the Office of Professional Compliance (Internal Affairs) as well as Field Operations. He formerly commanded shifts as a Captain at Jail Central, Arrest Processing, and in Field Operations. He also served as the Training and Recruiting Commander, where he was responsible for a variety of functions, including departmental in service and basic recruit training, promotional assessment centers, as well as recruiting for all uniformed positions. As a previous collateral duty, he also served as the Crisis Negotiations Unit Commander and served this unit in various capacities from 1997 until 2015.Since 2002, Dan has served as a General Instructor certified by both the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Education Standards Commission and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Education Standards Commission. He routinely instructs recruit classes as well as in Mecklenburg County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certification training.Dan spends considerable time serving the community through involvement with various civic organizations. He is active with several agencies involved in furthering awareness, acceptance, and education regarding mental health, substance use disorders, and intellectual and developmental disabilities especially Autism.
