About Dan Ratliff
I am Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at St. Mary's University. In that capacity, I have served as Project Director for a grant-funded program to provide trauma-informed mental health services for deployed military and their families. I developed one of the first graduate-level courses on trauma-informed counseling for military service members and their families. Prior to becoming Chair of the Department, I was Director of Quality Improvement for the University with a focus on teaching writing pedagogy to university instructors. I was a Fulbright Scholar to Romania in 2010, teaching ethics, program evaluation, and counseling techniques; while there I provided English writing consultation to doctoral students, faculty and corporate technical writers. I have published scholarly articles in international professional literature, written grants, and collaborated on others’ research writing.

Director Of Quality Improvement: Writing Excellence Institute
The goal of the St. Mary’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), Written Communication Excellence, is to improve our students’ written communication skills by enhancing the learning environment in our St. Mary’s Core (SMC) courses. By providing St. Mary’s faculty professional development and training through an annual Writing Excellence Institute (WEI), the QEP will change the learning environment to foster better student writing. Each year from 2016 through 2019, selected faculty members who teach SMC courses will be taught instructional design and methods by experts in written communication pedagogy. The goal of the WEI is for faculty members to know and implement best practices that develop students’ written communication skills. Ongoing peer consultation and support in January of each year will reinforce best practices.
