I worked on Metrics, a MongoDB/Node.js web application that calculates financial metrics, aggregated over time. Metrics took 90s to provide what should have been instantaneous results.- I researched speeding up Metrics using the MongoDB aggregation pipeline. Results were still slow and required complex, unmaintainable code.- I then created a PostgreSQL-based solution, storing the data as JSON, but with relational views on the data and generated tables of calculated results.The PostgreSQL solution reduced report loading time to 1.5s. Key stakeholders decided not to expand beyond a proof-of-concept. I documented the design and lessons learned so the project could be quickly resumed if business needs change.

I worked on the Printing team at Epic, a haven of like-minded nerds seeking to improve healthcare. On a daily basis, I wrote code (mostly in **MUMPS** and **C#**), reviewed other developers' code for correctness and maintainability, and investigated bugs on my own and with others. I was the guru on matters of database printing queues, print auditing, and the redesign of our printing interface for a new, web-based platform.- I **redesigned and rewrote the print auditing infrastructure**, to be both forwards-compatible with both the company-wide auditing infrastructure and backwards-compatible with the existing logging structure. I created an API (with **near-100% unit test coverage**) for other developers to submit auditing data.- I **converted the printing infrastructure to be web-ready** for a new browser-based application design. This involved: porting UI widgets from native **VB6** to **ASP.NET**, removing reliance on local OS calls for printing, adding HTML as a printable document interchange format, and **architecting APIs** to ease other teams' web transition.- Noticing long build times, I used **instrumentation-based profiling** to find two bottlenecks in our build system. I communicated concrete recommendations to the Release team to reduce the 11.5hr build times to an estimated 2hr.

Novartis hired me as a consultant to improve "Broker," an internally-developed personnel **Oracle** database system which had organically evolved over the years to meet various IT needs.- I **wrote an after-the-fact design document** for the previously undocumented system. This involved thorough research (through code review and interviewing) of Broker's architecture and role in the IT "big picture".- I **upgraded from Oracle 8 to 11**, maintaining backwards compatibility for inbound and outbound feeds.- I **automated 80% of data marriage** between inbound data feeds with a nightly **PL/SQL** stored procedure, by matching names and other identifying information across recently-created records.
