Educators lead students through trails in National Parks such as Yosemite, Golden Gate, and Prince William Forest as they develop skills for science, leadership, backpacking, and positive social and emotional habits.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is a one of the seven refuges under the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges Complex. Visitor Services intern duties are to- Design education programs for school age students that meet South Carolina and Georgia state education standards as well as meet the needs of the public- Conduct education programs for all ages via wagon rides, walking, and biking- Provide the visitor assistance at the refuge as a roving interpreter- Interact with the visiting public (annual visitation of 300,000)- Work with local volunteers to maintain the facilities, trails, and signs- Travel to nearby refuges to assist visitor services programs

The Washington National Cathedral, along with St. Albans School, National Cathedral School and Beauvoir, is located on a campus of 57 acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the nation’s Capital. Interns receive instruction and hands-on gardening experience. Under the direction of the horticulture staff, interns participate in the installation, maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the Bishop’s Garden and the cathedral grounds. Proper horticulture techniques are emphasized, including weeding, staking, pruning, irrigation, plant identification, and using IPM methods of insect and disease control.• Install and maintain new beds on the grounds.• Properly prune and manage trees and shrubs.• Identify and control weeds using natural methods.• Maintain health of fish pond, including maintenance of various filtration systems.• Design and plan new pollinator bed for the grounds.

The Urban Tree House (UTH) is the Student Conservation Association’s (SCA) environmental education center located in Anacostia Park in Southeast Washington, DC – where SCA staff and interns provide free environmental education programs and activities for DC-area K-12th grade youth on a number of topics, including: urban ecosystems and watersheds, waste and recycling, conservation and sustainability, environmental ethics, wildlife, and ecology.• Facilitate outdoor environmental education activities and games with hundreds of urban youth, ages ranging from elementary through high school.• Develop curriculum to integrate into program.• Provide outreach to community about programs offered at the Urban Tree House.• Keep an accurate record of the numbers of youth served and programs facilitated.• Work closely with partner organizations such as the National Park Service (NPS).• Represent SCA at community events.

Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C.

The Natural Resources Management intern assists the corresponding division of Rock Creek Park, an urban park with nearly 3,000 acres.• Assists Natural Resource Department with plant identification and inventory.• Identifies and assists in removal and prevention of invasive plants.• Organizes and manages volunteer permits.• Assists in organizing and managing volunteer events.• Conducts boundary checks and stormwater checks within the park.• Assists department with tracking of Eastern Box Turtles using wildlife radio telemetry.
