About Dana Gold

I serve as Senior Counsel for the Government Accountability Project and Director of its Democracy Protection Initiative. Over the past 25 years, I have represented and worked with dozens of whistleblowers on issues such as nuclear weapons risks, food safety, climate science censorship, banking fraud, illegal electronic surveillance, and immigration abuses. I currently lead Government Accountability Project’s immigration advocacy, serving as lead counsel for several Department of Homeland Security whistleblowers who have disclosed systemic risk of harm to both children and adult migrants in detention, who challenged the legality and adverse effects of the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” program, who raised the alarm about the health threat to immigrants, workers and the public posed by the spread of COVID-19 in ICE detention, and who disclosed that women immigrant detainees at Irwin County Detention Center were being subjected to hysterectomies and other gynecological procedures without fully informed consent. In addition, I lead our Democracy Protection Initiative, aimed at supporting employees in reporting threats to election integrity and our democracy. Having worked in academia teaching corporate governance and whistleblowing, served as an employee advocate for years on an innovative alternative dispute resolution council that resolved complex whistleblower concerns alongside corporate leaders at the Hanford nuclear site, and studied institutional corruption, my passion is educating diverse stakeholders--corporate board directors, ethics and compliance officers, public interest advocates, workers across status and sector, students and academics, lawmakers, journalists, and citizens--about the essential role whistleblowers play in promoting government and corporate accountability and a healthy democracy through the power of truthful information and moral courage.

Network Fellows connect with a cross-disciplinary group of scholars and practitioners who are currently working independently on issues of institutional corruption as academic research projects or applied within their organizations. I will be studying how the systemic response of institutions to vilify rather than support whistleblowers is itself a form of corruption that perpetuates other forms of corruption, and how instrumental mechanisms such as litigation, alternative dispute resolution, legislation, education, and journalism could be applied towards reforming management behavior that treats employees who raise serious concerns as problems rather than benefits.
