In my role as a Certified Peer Counselor at King County, I play a crucial part in providing community-based behavioral health treatment under civil court commitment. By assisting individuals struggling with behavioral health conditions, I contribute to early intervention efforts that positively impact lives. Working closely with the King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division, health care providers, and community organizations in the Seattle Area, I gain valuable experience in supporting individuals in need.

HUD-VASH is a collaborative effort between the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program. HUD-VASH combines HUD's Housing Choice Voucher (HCV, aka Section 8)) rental assistance for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VA provides these services for participating Veterans at VA medical centers (VAMCs), community-based outreach clinics (CBOCs), through VA contractors, or through other VA designated entities.My HUD-VASH team connects with the Seattle VAMC and surrounding King County VA Clinics, where Veterans receive services, case management, and healthcare while maintaining their permanent housing.

SOUND (formally Sound Mental Health). Mental illness, drug addiction, and criminal justice considerations are the leading contributors to Seattle's home crisis. As an intensive supportive housing CPC, I embrace past challenges with behavioral health, addiction, and criminal justice issues to provide peer support for the chronically unhoused who are transitioning into sustainable housing. SOUND implements an innovative model to better meet the needs of the community and people in services. CPCs work alongside other behavioral healthcare clinicians providing living proof recovery is possible. Gossett Place is an affordable housing community in the U-District, which is one of many success stories in Seattle.Provide unsupervised peer support for 70+ residents at an affordable living complex in the U-District to promote intensive supported affordable housing with comprehensive 24/7 case management. Twenty of these residents are VASH Veterans, where I coordinate peer support with the VA. All clients were once chronically unhoused and now have a secure, safe, and dignified place to live.Emphasize the development of trust, mutual respect, encouragement, and emotional support through sharing lived experience as a person in recovery.

Greater Seattle Area

As a contributor to King Country's Behavioral Health and Recovery Division, provide peer support services within an assisted outpatient model. Collaborate within the Involuntary Treatment Act (ITA) Court system of King County, supporting people who are enrolled in the County's new, evidence-based ITA Outpatient Court – Recovery Pilot Project (RPP). Develop supportive relationships with program participants, support their recovery and life goals, and connect them with formal and informal support. Function as a role model through sharing my lived experience with behavioral health issues, incarceration, homelessness, and substance abuse in a way that inspires hope for recovery and resiliency. Provide trauma-informed, strengths-based services and supports.Meet with participants at court, during treatment (if requested), and in the community for engagement, relationship building, and goal setting. Facilitate "warm hand-offs.”Work collaboratively with ITA Court and RPP team to support participants by amplifying their voice and choice. Advocate and facilitate access to information and resources.Support self-management, self-advocacy, and shared healthcare decision making.
