How lucky can a guy get? After a career spanning 34 years, I elected to retire from RBC Dominion Securities in 2015 and I quickly discovered that retirement was absolutely wonderful. I had always said that it would require an amazing opportunity in order to lure me out of retirement…and I found one! In April 2017, I was visiting Winnipeg and bumped into a dear friend who is a successful financial advisor. She mentioned that she was leaving her old firm and was rejoining Charlie Spiring who had recently founded Wellington-Altus Private Wealth as Canada’s newest independent broker dealer. Soon after, I received an invitation to meet Charlie as he was passing through Toronto on business. That one hour meeting changed everything!Charlie shared his vision with me of Wellington-Altus. He wasn’t new to this game. In 1993, he founded Wellington West, a full-service independent broker-dealer that grew to become one of Canada’s largest and most successful independent wealth management firms. In 2011, it was sold to National Bank of Canada, yielding the founding shareholders and advisors with a 2000% return on their investment. And now he was doing it again with the launch of Wellington-Altus…and doing it again with many of his former executives and employees. He invited me to meet the senior partners and employees and I was soon convinced this new firm was going to be successful.And so…in January 2018, I joined Wellington-Altus Private Wealth as a partner, shareholder and member of the Executive team. In its first three months, Wellington-Altus had already grown to over $3 billion in assets under management…a tremendous accomplishment!
