About Dani Lopez

CURRENT ROLEI am currently a 2nd-year M.Phil Student in the University of Utah’s Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. I am also a full-time researcher in the Utah NeuroRobotics Lab, where I develop methods to quantify anomalies in surface electromyography (sEMG) signals of stroke survivors, analyze data from sEMG metric experiments, and independently plan engineering projects aimed at improving diagnostics and rehabilitation tools for stroke survivors with upper-limb weakness. Despite my neuroscience background, I have discovered that my favorite part of working in the Utah NeuroRobotics lab is writing and debugging code to automate my data collection and analysis process.FUTURE AMBITIONSI am actively taking steps to prepare myself for a career in software engineering through coursework and experiences. I am taking courses on Codecademy to learn more coding languages, such as Python and Java, and to learn about larger subjects within computer science, such as machine learning. I will take a programming course and computer science seminars at the University of Utah in the Fall 2023 semester. I plan to incorporate more computer science and software engineering into my lab work to gain experience applying what I learned in courses. I am also seeking software engineering internship opportunities.TRANSFERRABLE SKILLS- In lab I write MATLAB programs to automate my signal analysis, metric derivation and data analysis processes. I have also used MATLAB to build a GUI that displays real-time sEMG signals and metrics for biofeedback. - I also have statistics, probability, data analysis, and R knowledge from lab, biostatistics, and epidemiology courses. - I have developed strong and versatile problem-solving skills from troubleshooting equipment and protocols in molecular biology, immunology, bioengineering, and robotics labs.- I am eager to learn and quickly pick up new skills, which has helped me succeed in multiple STEM environments.

    In the Utah NeuroRobotics Lab, under the direction of Dr. Jacob A. George, I analyze surface electromyography (sEMG) data and quantify the myoelectric characteristics of post-stroke upper-limb-spastic hemiparesis. For this work, I have:- Recruited stroke patients for my studies- Designed an experimental protocol to obtain relevant sEMG data from stroke patients and healthy participants- Wrote software in MATLAB to extract metrics from the sEMG data- Performed statistical analyses to compare the sEMG metrics from the paretic arm to the sEMG metrics from the healthy arm, as well as determine the strength of correlation between sEMG metrics and scores on clinical motor assessments- Presented my results and interpretations of the data at multiple symposia and conferences- Wrote an accepted IEEE conference proceeding on my work which will be published in late JulyDuring my time in the lab I have also written a proposal outlining experiments and projects that would contribute to making exoskeletons more accessible for stroke survivors.

    I learned and utilized immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the Schwab lab to investigate how high (T3) and low (T9) thoracic spinal cord transections affect mouse adrenal gland macrophage infiltration, cell proliferation and catecholamine synthesis. I also learned and utilized mouse locomotion and behavioral assays to investigate how secondary pneumonia infection after thoracic spinal cord contusion affects neurological recovery. Furthermore, I examined the lung tissues of the pneumonia infected spinal cord injury mice. For this project section, I examined previous relevant literature to inform my design of the IHC and image analysis/quantification scheme to assess alveolar wall collapse, red blood cell infiltration, and neutrophil infiltration. My additional responsibilities were analyzing and organizing the data from our automated open-field test boxes and basic animal care.
