My first studies involved the completion of a Bachelor of Nursing, which gave me a qualification as a Registered Nurse. This provided me with many opportunities and insights, with a focus on working with young people in the area of Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol, and Sexual Health. I was also fortunate to be provided opportunities to be involved in research that directly informed the development of new health services for young people. After working in this industry for 10 years, I decided to undertake further studies in Social Work, with a particularly focus on Mental Health. During these studies and my continued work in this area, it became obvious that there was a common element of leaving school early, which directly impacted on the ability for young people to gain employment, build resilience and have purpose in their life. While this was happening, I had observed my wife over a 10-year period develop a successful teaching career and noticed the positive impact she had on so many young people who went onto become community minded members of our society, something that the young people I had worked with often did not experience. It was at this point I realised the benefits a quality teacher could have on adolescence, leading me to teaching and completing a Bachelor of Education, majoring in Technology and Computing. Due to my previous studies in Information Technology (a hobby of mine) and health related work with young people, I was fortunate to gain a scholarship with Department of Education to assist moving into this area. This led me to become a Computing and Technology Teacher.I love my job and looking back at my career realise I have been very lucky to arrive at the place I am now, knowing I have the ability to impact on the positive wellbeing of our youth.
