Worked in the force Operations and Communications Centre. Managing incidents from the initial call to coordinating the appropriate response by police and other agencies where necessary. I began as a communications officer, handling emergency and non-emergency calls, and then progressed to be a controller, managing the incidents and response for a geographical area. Both roles included the following duties:- Handling 999 calls and grading them for response according to urgency- Handling non-emergency calls from the public and other agencies - Recording incidents and reports on command and control system - Efficiently convey information relevant to a situation from a caller to responding officers and anticipating the needs of both callers and attending officers and tailoring questions accordingly- Carrying out intelligence and database checks to build a bigger picture around an incident and identify risks- Offering reassurance and safety instructions to callers in distressing situations - Coordinating police response to incidents with consideration to minimising risks, maintaining officer safety and making the most of specialist resources; dog handlers, helicopter and officers with specific skills- Updated command and control system, in a professional manner, throughout the duration of an incident to create a comprehensive record of the incident for use throughout criminal investigations- Maintaining an even distribution of resources across a geographical area to minimise response times to incidents - Confidently make time critical decisions in high pressured situations
